Airborne Ultrasound Tactile DIsplay

A research group at the University of Tokyo has developed a system that allows virtual objects to be “touched” and manipulated in space. Using multiple transducers the system creates an acoustic radiation pressure field, which lets you “feel” and manipulate the object.

A working prototype has been built that for now only creates a vertical field. The video of the installation shows a piece of paper that clearly changes its position as it is moved across the transducers.
