Using an array of vertical wires and a projector it is possible to create an illusion of a dynamic 3D object floating in space. The projector is placed so that the wires appear to be evenly spaced from one another from it’s perspective. From any other perspective the wires create a 3D map due to the dimension of depth caused by the arrangement of the wires.
The resulting 3D image can be changed and manipulated using a mouse and a keyboard. The current Wiremap project uses 256 wires and a projector with a 1024 horizontal resolution, which means each wire has 4 pixels dedicated to it. The physical dimension of the installation is 96cm x 128cm x 96cm.
The official site has a lot of explanatory videos of the technology. Check out a short clip that shows the system in action.
The creator of Wiremap has included an instructable on his website if you want to create you own 3D display. The necessary software is available for Mac, Windows, and Linux.
