It's possible to push this style further, so it's less of a blend and more of a replacement, but then you get unnatural colors and shadows.

Using a selection of various 'makeshift components,' Years is a record player that translates wood's year rings into sound. Created by Bartholomäus Traubeck, the player reads the grain on the slices of wood and converts it into music.

In what gives a new meaning to the term 'green technology,' Bartholomäus Traubeck's tree-spinning turntable makes use of a Playstation Eye Camera and a stepper motor which controls the records arm. Once data is analysed and collected from the wood slices, the inner rings of the tree are transformed into audible arboreal sound, with the help of a computer running Ableton Live software.

The record player has been on display at the Galerie Lisa Ruyter in Vienna, and with a host of further scheduled exhibitions throughout 2012, be sure to keep an eye on Bartholomäus Traubeck's personal website.

Series of 8 carpets representing different maps of Hutong areas with a size of approximately one square kilometre and a population of 30000. Each of them has been isolated and presented as autonomous town within the big city. They are embroidered by hand with the same technique of the propaganda slogans on large fabrics used by the communist party during the seventies. The carpets have been filled with white wire wool insertions. All along year 2009 the urban carpets will be shown to the Hutong dwellers inside the courtyards and on the public lanes in order to share the project with people and bring it back to the city districts it was inspired from.

At this past week's GenCon, I caught up with Brian "Psychochild" Green and the rest of the Namaste crew as they publicly demoed Storybricks to the gaming crowd. Hit the jump as we look at why this program may just be the answer to a question you've never fully asked.

With many MMOs out there is that NPCs are traditionally laughable cardboard cutouts, thick enough to pin a quest or vendor sheet onto but nothing more. After all, how many NPCs do you recall from past games? A handful who got special storytelling treatment, probably.

This is why Storybricks' main focus is in encouraging users to imbue NPCs with true life rather than to treat them as quest connect-the-dots. Each character can sport a relationship with every other character in the world and reacts accordingly. Depending on whether certain triggers or conditions are met, the NPC can be programmed to change his or her behavior and actions. It's the flip side of how we often approach MMO gaming; instead of focusing on just one hero -- us -- Storybricks gives us the keys to the whole kingdom.

“Jammer Horn” is a mobile, sound piece without any sound. It is the inversion of the horn’s functionality in the digital domain. A temperature sensor triggers a high-range cell phone jammer which sits inside the horn giving the blower supremacy over the communication within the immediate vicinity. With the use of the horn’s bell, a directional signal is sent out blocking any cell phone activity within 30-50 meters of the horn. From the ancient period, the horn has symbolised the communication between gods and humans as messages of order, warning and prophecy which are turned into sound and transmitted over long distances much more powerful and directional than the human voice. Thus the horn has become an integral part of mythology and religion, while “Jammer Horn” becomes a forerunner of the next generations of our interactive art ﬁeld.

DaDa Box is an interactive storytelling object for entertaining. It adopts the idea of “Collage” from Dadaism, a cultural movement in 1910s, allows a person to generate stories by a simple tangible action: shaking. When the box is shaken, a story contained inside switches its order randomly by sentence, and starts playing to the listener.

The first application is a poem generator. The poem by Kurt Schwitters is stored in the box. With each shaking action, different orders of this poem are generated and played.

DaDa Box contains an Arduino Board, an Waveshield for audio playing, an accelerometer, a mini speaker and a LiPo battery.

My ‘Electronic Instant Camera’, is a combination of an analog b/w videocamera and a thermal receipt printer. The device is something in between a Polaroid camera and a digital camera. The camera doesn’t store the pictures on film or digital medium, but prints a photo directly on a roll of cheap receipt paper while it is taking it. As this all happens very slow, people have to stay still for about three minutes until a full portrait photo is taken.

Expert readers will assume that there’s some sort of microcontroller involved to connect camera and printer. And yes, that’s right. I used my favourite little μC, the ATmega8. And I like the fact that it would not even be able to store a complete videoimage in its 1KB SRAM. So the camera really has to forget the content of each line after it printed it on paper – in order to have enough space for capturing the next line. For videosignal sync separation I used again a LM1881, as I did for PING!.

One Hundred and Eight is an interactive wall-mounted Installation mainly made out of ordinary garbage bags. Controlled by a microcontroller each of them is selectively inflated and deflated in turn by two cooling fans.

Although each plastic bag is mounted stationary the sequences of inflation and deflation create the impression of lively and moving creatures which waft slowly around like a shoal. But as soon a viewer comes close it instantly reacts by drawing back and tentatively following the movements of the observer. As long as he remains in a certain area in front of the installation it dynamically reacts to the viewers motion. As soon it does no longer detect someone close it reorganizes itself after a while and gently restarts wobbling around.

Super-ordinary, amplified everyday objects.
The Strangers Project is a design intervention dealing with issues of familial closeness, daily ritual, tolerable inconvenience, nuanced conversation, and opportunity, missed (and gained). The purpose of the project is twofold: one, as a design research probe addressing issues of closeness and relationships, and to, as an experiment in interaction design, with the new interaction being embedded into an existing behavior instead of a new, learned behavior.

The project addresses the simple behavior of turning on a lamp in the home, and the amplification of this activity. With the project installed, each participant is simultaneously turning on a light in each other other two participants' homes when turning on an existing "hacked" lamp in her home. In this way, the participant is not asked to learn a new behavior, rather, the project functions within the framework of existing behaviors. The project takes place in three separate locations. A kit consisting of a two-light setup is installed in each participant's home. Each of the two lights is controlled via the internet by an existing lamp in the other two participants' homes. By turning on an existing lamp in his or her home, each participant is simultaneously turning on a light in each other other two participants' homes.

The project participants consist of a family of three (myself included), the Tsao family. The three participants, Gus, Alice, and Julia, though a family by definition, have lived as separate households for many years, and in essence are strangers to each others daily behavior.

The project began on April 1, 2008, and will take place on an ongoing basis. The ultimate goal is to have the project gain a sense of invisibility in the daily lives of the participants, and to then gauge the impact of the project once it reaches that point.

Matt Cottam: Wooden Logic

Matt Cottam is the founder of Tellart. Wooden Logic represents the first phase in a hands-on sketching process aimed at exploring how natural materials and craft traditions can be brought to the center of interactive digital design to give modern products greater longevity and meaning. It is only in the past decade or so that the community and tools have evolved to the point that designers can sketch with hardware and software; which before that was the sole domain of engineers and computer scientists. This project seeks to combine seemingly dissonant elements, natural, material and virtual, and explore how they can be crafted to feel as if they were born together as parts of a unified object anatomy that is both singular and precious.

Findings and Briefs

In March of 2009 Timo Arnall, Lennart Andersson, Matt Cottam, Adam Greenfield, Matt Jones, Jack Schulze and Mikael Wiberg spent a day lecturing at “Spring Summit 09:Sensing and Sensuality” and another day ideating around Cottam’s Masters Thesis. At the end of the ideation workshop, Jack and Matt J. present the findings and ideas from the conversation and sketching. Timo shot the video and chimes in from behind the camera and Cottam makes an appearance at the end.

This textile describes a wearable sensor to 'feel', detect and indicate electricity. I want to combine material behaviour with human perception to enable communication and to raise specific questions regarding increasing fields of electronic technology and our electrified behaviour. A woven textile uses electrical energy from its surroundings via influence - by human activity as well as electric fields nearby - and passes it in a comprehensible way to the user. For testing it, the textile is attached at the shoulder of the participant and has exposed yarns, which is to represent hair. If he or she is acting fast, the textile hair stands higher and higher - it charges up until it wants to discharge in its surroundings.

If the material received a huge quantity of electric energy, it gets more inflexible. After that it wants to give up its electricity and consequently can interrupt technical devices or give the wearer small electric shocks, after he charged it. This project demonstrates a possibility to enhance and sensitise materials to explore changing in perception. Figuratively the textile caricatures the fear of electric fields. The material probe describes electric current as something natural, which has different manifestations. This fabric can ask questions about cultural trends that will emerge from our constantly growing need for energy.

The transfer of data is becoming more and more unvisible. Wireless technologies like mobile phones, RFID, bluetooth and wifi, make sharing information both more ubiquitous and convenient.

The digital wind use the metaphor of the wind. Both real wind and wireless networks alike, change their direction and strength. The „Digital Wind“ instrument transforms the wifi signal of a building or room into sound. As feedback the visitor can hear a real wind sound. A stronger sound corresponds to a better quality of the signal. By walking around with the instrument in his hand, the visitor can interact with the invisible medium around him. He gets a feeling for the strength and shape of the field that is sourrounding him, and thereby gradually becomes a more conscious musician. Having several people interact with multiple instruments, creates an ensemble of wind sound.

objects made for dreams

To contrast this very direct and measurable inprecision between the reality and our internal construct of it, the series "Objects made for Dreams" revereses this process of "Objects made from the Mind". Instead of asking people to reconstruct a mental imprint of a physical reality, the project attempts to create a method to design tools to the world of dreaming.

The core of the work is a definition of a process, which then is manifested in three case studies illustrating how the process works in practice.

The idea is to engage oneself in the making of a tool to be transported to the dream world, to help cope with a recurring situation in the dream. The sound of the process of making a physical tool one attempts to bring to the dream, is recorded, and with the help of a sensor-equipped eye mask, played back at the time of REM-sleep phase. This is to bring the memories of the engagement with the desired tool to the subconscious at the time of active dreaming, thereby making it accessible again.

The Mill NY has crafted quite an elaborate and astonishing way for visitors to their office to engage with their work with Mill Touch. With multiple ways to access projects, the experience appears to encourage frequent tours through their archives. The entire apparatus was built by hand in-house and programmed by the NY Digital team. Nothing short of amazing.
